PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Clean Sleat project was launched at a well attended community meeting on Tuesday 27th January. The project is a two year programme which aims to reduce Sleat’s carbon emissions by 33% through local initiatives and community engagement. The Clean Sleat Project has been awarded £99,000 by the Climate Challenge Fund in order to meet their target.
Angus Robertson, project manager gave an excellent presentation outlining the principals of the project based on a study carried out in March 2008 by students from Flensburg University. The study identified that each Sleat resident contributes 17 tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere annually, 5 tonnes above the Scottish average.
The study broke down Sleat’s Carbon Footprint as follows; Material and Waste, 5348 Tonnes CO2 (37%), Direct Energy, 4283 T (30%), Transportation, 4044T (28%) finally Food and Water 650T (5%). An open question and answer session resulted in a list of positive plans and suggestions from those present.
A meeting was held on 9th February to set up a framework for the project and we have already been busy. Angus recently gave a presentation to Glendale Trust about Sleat Renewables Ltd and the Clean Sleat project. We have also hosted a visit from Kingsburgh Forest Trust who were interested to hear of our progress to date and we have given advice to Tarskavaig Grazing Committee and Craignish Community Company. Angus will be attending the Development Trust Association Scotland’s annual conference in June to lead a carbon foot-printing workshop .
